Publication Rates of Posters from the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting 2017-2023: Do Posters Represent the Framework of Upcoming Orthopaedic Research and the Growing Number of Female Orthopaedic Surgeons

Introduction The purpose of this study was to determine the publication rate of posters presented at the OTA annual meeting from 2017 to 2023. Materials and Methods All posters presented at the OTA annual meetings from 2017 to 2023 were identified from the official website of the OTA or were retrieved directly from OTA representatives. The name of the posters and the authors were then used to conduct a search using PubMed and Google Scholar. If the poster presentation was associated with a publication, information related to its publication (such as digital object identifier, journal of publication, and date of publication) was entered into a database. Results From 2017 to 2023, there were a total of 1,186 posters with 688 associated publications (58%). The highest rate of publication was 67.6% of posters published in 2019. From 2017 to 2023, there were a total of 271 female poster presenters, comprising 22.8% of all poster presenters during those annual meetings. The highest rate of female poster presenters was 30.9% in 2023. A total of 218 posters were published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, which published 40.1% of all OTA annual meeting posters published from 2017 to 2023. Conclusion Our research demonstrated a 58% publication rate over a 7-year period of posters presented at the OTA annual meetings. The quality of research presented in poster format at the OTA annual meeting is high, with publication rates higher than many other orthopaedic societies (eg, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine). Additionally, there appears to be a trend of increasing female poster presenters over time, with a range of 19.5% (2018) to 30.9% (2023).
