A Simple Stress Classification Method Using Two Elastic Finite Element Stress Analyses

Abstract Stress classification into primary, secondary, and peak stresses is essential in the design of nuclear components. Although general guidelines under typical loading scenarios are available in ASME, they are often insufficient to apply to new designs of small modular reactors. This paper proposes a simple stress classification method using two elastic finite element (FE) analyses with different elastic moduli. The method was validated using three examples including nozzle, y-piece, and elbow models subjected to various loading conditions. In all cases, the proposed method could effectively classify primary and secondary stresses, confirming its potential as a practical tool for nuclear component design.
