A New Methodology to Calculate the Scattering Parameters (SP) Based on Time‐ and Transfer‐Constant Analysis

ABSTRACT In this paper, a new approach to determine the transfer function of scattering parameters using the time‐ and transfer‐constant method is presented. This approach aims to enhance accuracy and efficiency in calculation and analysis of RF electronic and communication systems. It allows to determine the scattering parameters for a circuit with any number of storing and parasitic elements, to the desired level of accuracy, in terms of time constants of first‐order systems, i.e., and . The Miller effect is used in the calculation of time constants. This method gives higher accuracy compared to approximation techniques, in a shorter time frame and intuition for optimizing the circuit performance. This method proposes a node‐by‐node analysis (without complex arithmetic) and gives an insight into the circuit operation and design, especially for narrow‐band circuits. The method can help the circuit designer to analyze complex circuits with more parasitics, get results closer to practical measurements, and find the important parameters for circuit optimization and tuning. Scattering parameters for narrow‐band double‐tuned CS and Cascode amplifiers are calculated using the proposed method. The calculated transfer functions (with low‐level models and reduction in accuracy of the calculated transfer functions by three orders) are compared with the simulation results obtained using high‐level models from a TSMC 180‐nm RFCMOS technology.
