Is the intelligent development of libraries accelerating? A decade of comprehensive scientometric assessment and SWOT analysis

The intelligent development of libraries has gained increasing attention with the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies. However, previous research often treats quantitative mapping and strategic evaluation as separate efforts, limiting integrated insights into the field’s evolution. This study addresses that gap by combining scientometric and SWOT analyses to examine research on the intelligent development of libraries published between 2015 and 2024 in the Web of Science Core Collection. Scientometric techniques are applied to identify research hotspots, collaboration patterns, and thematic trends. Based on these findings, a SWOT framework is used to assess key strengths such as technological efficiency and personalized services, weaknesses including system complexity and limited user adaptability, opportunities such as interdisciplinary integration and AI-driven innovation, and threats related to privacy, security, and ethical risks. The study further synthesizes these insights across seven thematic areas, offering targeted strategies and potential solutions to address core challenges. By integrating scientometric and SWOT analyses, this study not only maps the evolving knowledge landscape of intelligent libraries but also translates key insights into actionable recommendations for practitioners and policymakers. It deepens understanding of the field and supports strategic development for intelligent library transformation.
