Ungrading: Shifting the focus from grades to learning
Traditional grading systems have been criticized for perpetuating educational inequality and fostering competitive rather than collaborative learning. In response, ungrading has emerged as an alternative approach to assessment that emphasizes holistic, student-centered methods such as detailed feedback, self-assessment, peer review, and reflective learning. Ungrading shifts the focus from achieving high grades to prioritizing learning, growth, and mastery. This approach promotes equity by providing all students with equal opportunities to succeed based on individual progress and effort. There is a range of strategies for implementing ungrading that allow for comprehensive, partial, or minimal adoption. Despite potential challenges, such as resistance from students and increased workload for instructors, strategic communication, training, and support can facilitate successful and effective integration. Ungrading fosters a more inclusive, supportive, and engaging educational experience, ultimately leading to more meaningful learning outcomes.
