Single-Parent MOF-Derived V-Doped Bimetallic Nickel Cobalt Selenide as Cathode and Porous Carbon as Anode Material for Asymmetric Supercapacitor Devices

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based materials are presently under intensive investigation for their application in both positive and negative electrode configurations of supercapacitors. Vanadium-doped nickel cobalt selenide (NCSE) samples synthesized from the MOF precursor ZIF-67 were developed for a positive electrode material. X-ray diffraction confirmed the preparation of MOF-derived nickel cobalt selenide via a facile hydrothermal process. The crumpled structure of nickel cobalt selenide created an ample interlayer space, resulting in a high specific surface area (SSA) with multiple diffusion pathways. The porous nano-onion-like structured negative electrode material with a large SSA of ∼705.37 m2 g–1 facilitated higher accessibility to the ion adsorption sites. Optimized NCSE4 achieved a maximum specific capacitance of ∼2070 F g–1 (828 C g–1) at a current density of 1 A g–1. Furthermore, an assembled ASC using NCSE4 as a positive electrode and zinc–cobalt-bimetallic MOF-derived porous activated carbon as a negative electrode material attained a high specific capacitance of ∼326.8 F g–1 (310 C g–1) at a current density of 1 A g–1. Further, the fabricated device achieved a high energy density of ∼116.19 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 799.81 W kg–1 with remarkable cyclic stability (83.71% after 10,000 cycles). This outstanding performance confirmed that the strategy was successful and beneficial for future energy storage applications.
