OA2068. Impact of adolescent violent behaviors in family and school environment and low school performance

Abstract Background The occurrence of violent behaviour of minors in the parental and school environment is a complex social phenomenon which has been rapidly increasing over the last five years. Sometimes children with violent behaviour manifestations exhibit poor academic performance. Methods The aim of this research is to investigate the possible association between experiencing domestic violence and bullying and the ways in which students’ violent behaviours affect their school performance. The psychosocial determinants leading to aggressive behaviour are examined. A quantitative method is applied to a random sample of 230 students, in two Gymnasiums and two Lyceums in the Prefecture of Heraklion, to the parents of these students and to their general education teachers (a sample of 60 philologists, mathematicians, chemists) and to their specialised educators (four school social workers and four psychologists, four special education teachers and four school directors). A series of standardised questionnaires is used. Results The study is ongoing, but initial findings indicate that violent behaviours of minors in Greece are related both to their experiences of domestic violence and the drop in their school performance, making these conditions a multidimensional social problem. Conclusions There is an urgent need to highlight holistic practices for the prevention of violent behaviour among adolescent students and to design individualised interventions in the family and school environment to reduce this crucial social issue. Key messages • In Greece, adolescents’ violent behaviours have been found to be related to both their experiences of domestic violence and poor school performance. Therefore, there is a need for individualised interventions in the family and school environment. Topic Violent juvenile behaviour, domestic violence, school performance.
