Concurrent unilateral inguinal cryptorchidism and irreducible inguinal hernia in a pug

Abstract Cryptorchidism is a common congenital anomaly in dogs, defined as the failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum. It is more frequent in small breeds and may predispose to abnormalities such as an inguinal hernia due to delayed closure of the inguinal ring. Although usually reported separately, their coexistence can result in serious complications, especially when the hernia is irreducible. This report describes a 2‐year‐old male pug with a rapidly enlarging left inguinal swelling, anorexia, and lethargy. Clinical and imaging evaluations revealed unilateral inguinal cryptorchidism with an irreducible hernia containing omental tissue. Surgical exploration confirmed vascular compromise of the omentum and a cryptorchid testicle. Both were excised, and herniorrhaphy was performed. The normally descended testicle was also removed prophylactically. Postoperative management consisted of a 7‐day course of amoxicillin–clavulanic acid and a 3‐day analgesic protocol with meloxicam, and the patient recovered uneventfully without complications.
