A four-hour urine sample is accurate in measuring creatinine clearance in acute kidney injury
A rapid, real-time, and accurate bedside method to measure creatinine clearance in acute kidney injury is not available to the clinician. Previously described methods relied on serum creatinine with a time interval of 24 hours between serum collections suggesting that the data was either retrospective and reflected the creatinine clearance prior to the second serum collection, and that a prospective measure would require an additional 24-time delay to estimate the creatinine clearance going forward. This paper describes a mathematical proof of concept that a 4-hour urine collection is accurate in measuring creatinine clearance in acute kidney injury, providing the clinician a valuable tool in treating the patient with acute kidney injury.
