From bench to batch: scaling up copper-67 production via the 70 Zn(p,α) 67 Cu nuclear reaction

Abstract In this work, we present a novel radiochemical separation method for isolating radiocopper from zinc targets, in particular optimized for use in compact cyclotron systems for 67 Cu production from 70 Zn. We further report – for the first time using compact cyclotrons – 67 Cu yields in the GBq range, with molar activities reaching 5–35 % of the theoretical maximum. In addition, high radionuclidic purities comparable to previously described values are presented (>99 %). The complete workflow, including target preparation, irradiation parameters, post-irradiation handling, and quality control, is described in detail, offering a robust and reproducible framework for advancing a reliable 67 Cu production in decentralized settings.
