Embracing innovation: overcoming barriers to technology integration in mental health care

Purpose This paper aims to present a practitioner-oriented conceptual synthesis of the challenges and opportunities in adopting digital innovations in mental health care, rather than reporting on new empirical research. Design/methodology/approach Providers often question the efficacy of technology, citing potential disruptions to therapeutic relationships, ethical risks and the burden of adapting to new tools. Organizational challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of training and minimal leadership support, further amplify these hesitations. Findings By addressing these barriers through a multifaceted, collaborative approach, stakeholders can foster trust, enhance the alignment of technological tools with clinical needs and improve patient outcomes. Originality/value Ultimately, the successful integration of technology in mental health care requires an ecosystem of support that prioritizes provider engagement, ethical considerations and ongoing evaluation.
