Emergency situations: ART in the time of a pandemic
This paper discusses the potential impact of a pandemic on fertility services. Experiences from 2 European countries during the COVID-19 pandemic are drawn on to illustrate the issues that may arise during a pandemic, their consequences, and potential for mitigation. As part of disaster planning, the special impact of pandemic should be included. This must include the need for immediate response, but also, as we have discovered, the slow-burn impact on continuing services. It is also vital that international institutions focusing on health care work closely to monitor potential risk factors and develop emergency plans, based on all possible hypothetical scenarios, and set up effective alert systems.
