Strategies to Reduce Urban Heat Island Effect in Compact Low Rise Density Residential Areas of Delhi, India

Statement of the problem. Cities frequently experience urban heat islands (UHIs), defined as regions where urban environment is warmer than rural surroundings. These characteristics are a direct result of urbanization which eliminates natural vegetation and water sources and replaces them with impermeable surfaces with low albedo. Due to the urban heat island effect (UHI), cities are especially vulnerable to excessive heat events. The relationship between UHI and urban thermodynamics is explained in recent studies in the physical sciences, and these lay the groundwork for understanding how changes in the physical environment affect microclimates. The aim of the study is to analyzethe development of urban climate change as well as the technology used to mitigate it. Results. Significant effort has been made over this particular time frame to comprehend and monitor urban climate change as well as to design and test alternative mitigation methods during summer months in Delhi’s densely populated residential areas. The case of Delhi, India, using the microclimate modeling system ENVI-met which models temperature effects of various construction situations, has been analyzed. Conclusions. As a result, after all possible interventions, we concluded that whenall the other strategiesare being used, the temperature is increasing in comparison to the baseline case, so applying high emissivity paint on the facade and green roof is the best strategy to mitigate high temperatures during summers in an urban area.
