Filhos da Terra, mestizos identities at the margins of Portuguese Imperial Expansion, written by António Manuel Hespanha
Filhos da Terra is A.M. Hespanha’s swan song: he passed away few months after
the book’s first publication in 2019 (Tinta-da-China editions). Hespanha was an
internationally renowned legal historian, known for works such as As Vésperas
do Leviathan (1986), which helped to establish a new history of the nature of
the State in early modern Portugal. This review focuses on the new edition of
Filhos da Terra, published in 2025 (Brill).
