In Vitro Anti-Sickling Effect of Moringa oleifera Leaf Extract
Introduction: Moringa oleifera leaf is traditionally used for treating iron deficiency and managing sickle cell anemia, which are currently considered palliative treatments. There is growing interest in using this plant for nutritional and therapeutic purposes in managing sickle cell anemia. Although there are now therapies for sickle cell disease, they can have negative side effects; thus, it is important to investigate more natural alternative solutions. This research focused on the specific antisickling properties to a large extent, the bioactive compounds responsible for these properties in the Moringa oleifera leaf extracts. Method: This work observed the influence of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of Moringa oleifera dry leaf extract on sickle blood cells under the microscope. Results: The gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis (GC-MS) revealed the presence of fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids, ketones, aldehydes, terpenes, esters, alcohols, and alkanes. Discussion: The work has verified the anti-sickling action of this bioactive compound in vitro, which unsickles the sickle red blood cells, increasing their oxygen binding capacity. result: The research has successfully identified and characterized bioactive compounds present in Moringa oleifera leaf, showcasing significant antisickling activity. The specific compounds include; 1,2,3-Trimethyl benzene, Decane, Hendecane, 2,3,3-Trimethyloctane, Methyl decanoate, Hexadecanoic acid, Oleic Acid, Octadecanoic acid, 2-Butyl-1-octanol, have displayed the remarkable capability to hinder the sickling of red blood cells. Conclusion: Due to the ineffectiveness of the treatment of sickle cell disease, we proposed plant extracts to counter the genetic disorder. It established the specific Anti-sickling effects by identifying the phytochemical resource in the Moringa oleifera extracts responsible for these effects. other: The work has entailed establishing the specific Antisickling effects and identifying the phytochemical resource in the Moringa oleifera extracts responsible for these effects.
