Scaffold polymer blend based on wheat gluten/poly (vinyl butyral), synthesized by gamma radiation and its application in tissue engineering

Abstract Polymer blends based essentially on wheat gluten (WG) as a protein polymer and different ratios of poly (vinyl butyral) PVB were prepared by solution casting in the form of thin films and then exposed to different doses of gamma radiation. We looked into how gamma irradiation can improve the compatibility of polymeric blends made with wheat gluten. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were all examined. The results showed that gamma-irradiation improved the physical properties. It was found that the degradation of the wheat gluten component caused the gel content to decrease at higher irradiation doses. However, the presence of wheat gluten improved the thermal stability at higher irradiation doses. Vero (Monkey kidney) cells proliferate more rapidly in the blend WG/PVB (90/10 %) irradiated to 25 kGy than in the irradiated one. On the other hand, the Paulownia Tomentosa cells proliferation was better in blends with a higher concentration of WG.
