Mandibular Buccal Bifurcation Cysts: Diagnosis and Management
Mandibular buccal bifurcation cysts (MBBCs) pose a distinct diagnostic challenge because of the difficulty in distinguishing these uncommon lesions from others with similar clinical and radiographic presentations. As improvements in the understanding of their clinical course has led to MBBCs being managed less invasively, their recognition and accurate diagnosis are crucial to avoid overtreatment and affected children having teeth extracted unnecessarily. Conservative management has benefits in maintaining the developing dentition and avoids surgical intervention and general anaesthesia in paediatric patients. CPD/Clinical Relevance: An appreciation of the features of MBBCs, aggressive surgical treatment and avoidable tooth loss in young patients may be prevented.
