A Review of the Guidelines for Extracting First Permanent Molars for General Dentists
First permanent molars (FPM) are commonly of poor prognosis due to caries and molar–incisor hypomineralization. The Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS), a branch of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, has most recently updated their ‘Guideline for the Extraction of First Permanent Molars in Children’ in March 2023. This article reviews and summarizes these guidelines to demonstrate some of the key principles in managing interceptive extractions of compromised FPMs. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Although poor prognosis first permanent molars should be managed by specialist teams, general dentists should be aware of the guidelines for their extraction.
