Empathy as the Missing Link for Seizing and Transforming Capabilities in the Open Innovation Context
ABSTRACT Based on qualitative research and a micro‐foundations approach, this research explains the relevance of a bridge between open innovation, dynamic capabilities, and empathy. It proposes a conceptual framework to investigate the role of individual and collective empathy not only in sensing opportunities but also in seizing and transforming capabilities within the open innovation context. Empathy implies feeling the same affective state as another person. The cases investigated in this study contribute to understanding how collective empathy and empathetic leaders influence the seizing and transforming phases during open innovation projects. This research contributes to understanding the organizational context that fosters the development of collective empathy.
