Correction: Metabolic rate scaling, ventilation patterns and respiratory water loss in red wood ants: activity drives ventilation changes, metabolic rate drives water loss

There were errors in J. Exp Biol. (2018) 221, jeb182501 (doi:10.1242/jeb.182501).The authors were made aware by a fellow researcher of a discrepancy between the metabolic rate scaling slopes reported in Table 2 and those reported in the accompanying text. The authors ascertained that the anomalous data were generated from a previous dataset that included individuals removed from the final data set. Data for these ants were removed due to being of indeterminate ventilation pattern, as reported in the original manuscript. The associated figure (Fig. 2) uses the appropriate data.Table 2 has been updated with correct slope estimates (see below) along with the associated values in the main text in the Results:‘The linear mixed effects model, which included ventilation type as a factor, predicted slopes of 0.43±0.14 (Fig. 2A), whereas a linear model, in which ventilation type was ignored, predicted a slope of 0.57±0.18 (Fig. 2B)’ and ‘The linear model with only continuously ventilating ants predicted a slope of 0.50±0.19 (Fig. 2C) and the linear model with only cyclically ventilating ants predicted a slope of 0.48±0.24 (Fig. 2D).’Although there are minor differences in the reported slope values, these do not alter or influence the conclusions drawn from that analysis, namely, that model selection and consideration of ventilation pattern can alter slope estimates when analysing metabolic allometry. The authors apologise for these errors.
