Infrastructure as a Service with Strong Tenant Separation on a Supercomputer

This paper explores the innovative implementation of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) on a HPE Cray Shasta EX supercomputer. In cloud environments, IaaS offers scalable on-demand access to virtualized resources. However, applying IaaS principles to high-performance computing (HPC) systems without relying on virtualization technologies poses some challenges, since they typically have a tightly coupled software stack. We address these challenges in a co-design partnership between an HPC provider, CSCS, and an end-user institution, PSI, by developing a suite of technologies for the HPE Cray Shasta EX system architecture that supports resource isolation and granular control. This approach not only provides the IaaS model in supercomputing environments but also enables dynamic resource management.
