Administrative Strategies for Managing Students’ Academic Workload in Higher Education

This study examined administrative strategies for managing students’ academic workload. The study adopted a desk review approach, relying entirely on secondary data sourced from peer reviewed journal articles, books, and credible online publications. The literature indicates that workload management in higher education is a complex, multi-dimensional issue that cannot be addressed by isolated solutions. Instead, it requires a coordinated approach that combines structural planning, technological tools, and collaborative governance. Additionally, the review highlighted key strategies such as curriculum alignment and mapping, coordinated assessment scheduling, and workload quantification as among the critical tools for ensuring balance and fairness in academic delivery. Based on the reviewed literature, it is concluded that effective management of students’ academic workload is central to improving both academic quality and student well-being. Thus, institutions that adopt administrative strategies in managing academic workload not only enhance learning outcomes but also promote fairness, equity, and sustainability in higher education systems. The study suggested among other recommendations that administrators in higher educational institutions should establish formal policies to regulate workload limits, assessment distribution, and credit-hour expectations. Also, institutions should provide proactive support through academic advising, mentoring, workshops on time management, and counselling services to empower students to manage responsibilities successfully.
