Intersex subjectivities: Construction and transformation of identities at the margins of the gender binary

Abstract This ethnographic study examines how intersex subjectivities are constructed and transformed in Chile through in‐depth interviews with 14 intersex individuals diagnosed at different life stages. Using five analytical categories—embodied dispositions, legitimation acts, affect‐power webs, bodily reconfiguration, and self‐construction practices—we explore how intersex identities develop within tensions between medical pathologization and personal agency. Our findings reveal three distinct diagnostic temporalities that configure different subjectivation trajectories, each creating unique conditions for identity formation and resistance. Rather than following linear paths, intersex experiences involve complex negotiations between normative structures and possibilities for resignification in the interstices of the sex‐gender system. The study contributes to decentering Western‐centric narratives about intersex experiences while providing insights relevant for healthcare policy and human rights advocacy in Latin America.
