Vulnerability Assessment for RCC Elevated Water Storage Reservoir in Indian Context Using an Android App

Water storage reservoirs (WSRs) act as lifeline structures providing water for sanitation, healthcare units, and other emergency utilities reinforced cement concrete (RCC). WSRs have suffered large-scale damage during past earthquakes, and their failure can lead to catastrophic damage. This paper attempts to prepare a seismic vulnerability assessment score sheet based on a questionnaire using two different standard methods, considering weighting coefficients. The score sheet is prepared considering 12 vulnerability parameters associated with the questionnaire. Because the aging of the tanks deteriorates the structure, the score sheet is modified with the age effect. Two water storage reservoirs in the metropolitan city of Kolkata, India’s business hub, were considered randomly as case studies. An attempt has also been made to develop a user-friendly Android app (RVS_WT) to make the assessment process more rapid. It is observed that mobile technology eases data collection and gives the seismic vulnerability index within a few minutes during the survey. Hence, practice engineers can easily use such vulnerability assessment methods for prioritizing repair and rehabilitation action.
