Terrorism, Politics and Human Rights Advocacy: The #BringBackOurGirls Movement. By Temitope B. Oriola
Abstract In Terrorism, Politics and Human Rights Advocacy: The #BringBackOurGirls Movement, the author provides a detailed and multifaceted investigation of the women-led social movement birthed through the Chibok schoolgirl kidnapping. It exemplifies a striking balance of academic inquiry and moral exigency, thus making it an important contribution to the multidisciplinary studies in African scholarship. The first chapter makes an erudite historical and analytical analysis of Islamic dynamism and progression in Northern Nigeria, exemplifying the author’s rich depth of knowledge and meritorious exploration of the broader historical patterns of dissent in the Islamic religion and the revivalism of Northern Nigeria’s cultural tradition. For instance, the author used the Fulani Jihad (Usman Dan Fodio’s Islamic Jihadism) to provide a nuanced historical context for the evolution of the religion and the emergence of the numerous religious sects within the region. Before the emergence of Boko Haram, the author illustrates a historical analysis of the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial political and religious dynamics, and the eventual rise of Islamic movements.
