Wave-Speed-Independent Traveling Wave Fault Location Method for Flexible DC Transmission Lines

Accurate fault location in flexible DC transmission lines is essential for ensuring rapid fault clearance and system reliability. However, traditional traveling-wave methods are often affected by wave velocity variations and synchronization errors. To address these issues, this paper proposes an improved double-ended traveling-wave fault location method specifically designed for flexible DC transmission systems. The method utilizes the inherent smoothing reactors of DC lines to simplify the identification of reflected waves and introduces a location algorithm that is independent of wave velocity and synchronous timing accuracy. By integrating the advantages of both single-ended and double-ended approaches, the proposed method significantly enhances location accuracy. Simulation results and comparisons with conventional double-ended methods verify its superiority and robustness.
