Primary ectopic pregnancy in a cat: Implications of diagnosis and management
Abstract This case report details a rare instance of a primary ectopic pregnancy in a 3‐year‐old female cat. Following a history of dog bite trauma and subsequent delivery of three stillborn kittens, the cat presented with a right abdominal flank swelling. Radiographic examination revealed an extrauterine fetal skeleton. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed an ectopic fetus adhered to the omentum, with an intact uterus. An ovariohysterectomy was performed, and histopathology revealed initial placental development on the perimetrium with secondary placentation and marked vascular hypertrophy at the omental attachment site. This case, the first histologically confirmed primary ectopic pregnancy in a cat, suggests trauma as a potential aetiological factor and underscores the importance of comprehensive diagnostics and timely surgical intervention for successful management and prevention of complications.
