Development of High‐Performance Multiphase Elastomers: Synergistic Design of <scp>MXene</scp> / <scp>XNBR</scp> / <scp>EPDM</scp> ‐g‐ <scp>MAH</scp> / <scp>EPDM</scp> Blends

ABSTRACT In this research, the synthesis of novel nanocomposites based on various blends of XNBR/EPDM in different ratios (0, 20, 40, 60, and 100 phr) containing (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.1 phr) of MXene, using a two‐roll mill, has been investigated. The evaluation of the influence of the EPDM‐g‐MAH (maleic anhydride‐grafted EPDM), compatibilizer, and the role of MXene on morphology, curing behavior, mechanical, and rheological properties was in the road map of this research. The curing characteristics of the nanocomposites were analyzed using a moving die rheometer. Additionally, the microstructure of the samples was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that increasing the MXene content in the composite resulted in higher torque and extended curing and scorch times. Fracture surface analysis revealed that EPDM‐g‐MAH enhanced the dispersion of MXene within the XNBR/EPDM matrix, resulting in a uniform distribution with minimal aggregation. Furthermore, the incorporation of MXene contributed to a rougher fracture surface morphology. The incorporation of EPDM‐g‐MAH and higher MXene loadings also reduced the dispersed phase size of EPDM in the XNBR matrix, resulting in a more homogeneous dispersion. Moreover, the nanocomposites exhibited enhanced properties with increasing compatibilizer and MXene content.
