Quest for Efficient Carbon‐Capture Membranes Impregnated With Bio‐MOF‐11 Nanoparticles

ABSTRACT CO 2 separation from gas mixtures via polymeric membranes has gained considerable attraction due to its energy‐efficient, sustainable and environment‐friendly features. Incorporation of non‐plasticizing biodegradable bio‐MOF nanoparticles into polymer matrices enormously enhances carbon capture efficiency and the lifetime of resulting hybrid membranes. Polyethersulfone was doped with bio‐MOF‐11 nanoparticles followed by polyaniline coating to enhance the separation performance of resulting composite membranes. Comprehensive characterization techniques were employed to evaluate structural, morphological, crystalline, thermal, and gas separation properties of concocted membranes. FTIR analysis confirmed chemical interactions within composite membranes strata; SEM micrographs provided insights into surface morphology, cross‐sectional structure and filler dispersion; XRD analysis revealed the crystalline nature of bio‐MOF‐11; and TGA assessed thermal stability and shelf life of membranes. Permeation results demonstrated significant enhancement in CO 2 separation performance on adding bio‐MOF‐11 and PANI. 10 wt.% PANI loading improved CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of polyethersulfone membrane by about 3 and 5 times, respectively. These findings highlight the huge potential of bio‐MOF‐11/PANI‐coated MMMs as advanced materials for efficient CO 2 capture in industrial applications.
