Method of interpreting the perception of everyday sounds in a listed urban and architectural complex

Considering noise as a social and anthropological issue goes beyond its acoustic definition, requiring an analysis of its impacts on human relationships, culture, and societal organization. Noise reveals fundamental aspects of social structure and evolving cultural dynamics. In this context, the main objective of this research is to identify the importance of incorporating factors that characterize sound perception in noise assessments methods within the daily lives in a listed urban and architectural complex in Brazil. To achieve this, a pilot study was structured in three stages: (1; 2) measurement of sound pressure levels and structured interviews with residents; and (3) characterization of the sound environment through soundwalks, audio recordings, and noise mapping of the area. Statistical analysis of measurement data, combined with semantic analysis of interviews with 235 persons, revealed that, although the lack of control over neighborhood noise, bars, music, and sociocultural activities is attributed to municipal management negligence, several sociocultural factors influence the perception of these sounds. The importance of considering t the relationship between high sound levels, acoustic comfort, well-being, and local dynamics, as well as concepts such as belonging and spatial appropriation.
