Soundscape Study at the Federal University of Santa Maria

Noise limits are classified according to objective criteria, such as sound pressure levels. However, these criteria do not consider subjective and psychoacoustic factors, which are essential for evaluating soundscapes and can contribute to a more comprehensive analysis of the acoustic quality of an environment. The study of soundscapes provides a more detailed and accurate understanding of acoustic spaces. In this context, the present study aims to characterize the soundscape of the main campus of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). The adopted assessment method includes binaural measurements, sound level recording, noise map creation, and listening test conduction. This approach allows for an integrated analysis of the soundscape, considering both objective and subjective aspects. The results from the noise maps indicate significant levels of the operations at the Santa Maria airbase, which are reflected in the perceptions of volunteers in subjective listening tests, who regard noise as a negative characteristic of the UFSM soundscape. From another perspective, the characterization of the measured locations reveals a wealth of biodiversity. Even in the more "urban" areas, the extensive greenery of the University allows for the presence of various species and their sound signatures.
