Martensitic Transformation and Shape Memory Effect in NiTi/PPX-C Composites Dedicated to Medical Applications
Parylene C was used to coat the surface of a commercial NiTi alloy. A modified chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process was applied to produce layers with thicknesses ranging from 5 μm to 15 μm. The adhesion, surface roughness, and wettability of the NiTi/PPX-C composites were characterized. Additionally, their chemical structure and phase composition were analyzed. The martensitic transformation behavior of the NiTi/PPX-C samples was examined in relation to the processing parameters as well as superelastic behavior. The results indicated that parylene C formed a semi-crystalline layer well adhered to the polycrystalline NiTi substrate. A force of nearly 200 N was required to initiate coating delamination. The NiTi/PPX-C composites revealed the reversibility of the martensitic transformation, which occurred entirely below -10 °C. The superelastic behavior, with no adverse effects on the adhesion of coatings, was observed after multiple bending cycles.
