Ionic Liquid-Derived Organic–Inorganic Cocrystal: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Its Applications toward Dye Removal and Antidiabetic Activities

This research focuses on the synthesis of an organic-inorganic cocrystal, i.e., [BmIm]3[PW12O40], utilizing Keggin-type polyoxometalates and single crystals were grown. It highlights the distinctive properties and methods for synthesizing cocrystals, as well as their physicochemical properties and effects on various types of applications. A detailed structural characterization was conducted using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. All distinct types of intermolecular interactions, encompassing both organic-inorganic and organic-organic interactions were discussed in detail. The cocrystal exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of 93 mg/g for methylene blue dye, maintaining approximately 80% efficiency over five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, suggesting promising applications in wastewater treatment. Electronic band structure calculations confirm a bandgap energy of 2.1 eV. Furthermore, the cocrystal exhibited antidiabetic effects in animal models, effectively regulating glucose levels at a low dosage of 0.1 mg/g body weight. This treatment not only reduced reactive oxygen species but also enhanced the expression of DNA repair protein p53. PXRD analysis confirms the phase purity; FESEM and TEM analyses exhibit spherical-shaped morphology with particle sizes of ∼30-50 nm. Overall, these findings indicate that [BmIm]3[PW12O40] holds significant potential for both environmental and biomedical applications.
