Identity Reconstruction Following Neurological Disability Onset
Identity reconstruction following the onset of neurological disability presents a major barrier to disability adjustment. This article presents findings of a literature review that examined identity reconstruction following the onset of a neurological disability and explored how identity reconstruction impacts overall disability adjustment. Individuals in these studies categorized the onset of a neurological disability as a disruption to their identity and longed to find continuity in their identity post-injury. To help individuals to reach their full potential during the process of identity reconstruction, it is important for rehabilitation counselors to recognize the individual impact of neurological disability and implement an approach that frames disability in a positive manner.
