The impact of emotion regulation and emotional intelligence on the relationship of dispositional mindfulness and collective mindfulness
Purpose This research examines the role of dispositional mindfulness, emotion regulation and emotional intelligence in fostering collective mindfulness within healthcare organizations. We focus on hospitals to understand how these factors contribute to fostering collective mindfulness. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 417 healthcare professionals across four university hospitals in Egypt using validated measures to examine the relationship between dispositional mindfulness, emotion regulation, emotional intelligence and collective mindfulness. Findings The results indicated that dispositional mindfulness positively influences emotion regulation, which, in turn, contributes to the development of collective mindfulness within organizations. Furthermore, the research reveals that emotional intelligence acts as a positive moderator, strengthening the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and emotion regulation. We also found an intriguing contrast, as emotional intelligence has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between emotion regulation and collective mindfulness, suggesting that emotional intelligence enhances individual mindfulness while interfering with the group's overall mindfulness processes. Originality/value This research offers valuable practical implications for organizations seeking to implement targeted interventions and practices that enhance safety and effectiveness. The insights provided can help organizations identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to strengthen safety and performance. Promoting mindfulness practices among employees can support the cultivation of a culture of collective mindfulness, leading to improved safety protocols and enhanced organizational resilience. Furthermore, by introducing emotional intelligence and emotion regulation training programs, organizations can better equip employees to manage emotions in high-stress situations, ultimately fostering improved decision-making, patient safety and overall organizational performance.
