Promoting Scholarship on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Teaching of Psychology
An increasing focus on belonging and justice in psychology has led to considerable attention to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in our scholarship and teaching. Specifically, in 2021, APA released an EDI framework (American Psychological Association, 2021a) designed to support the promotion of equity, diversity, and inclusion across multiple domains. The EDI framework aims to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive field of psychology by impacting psychology education, practice, science, and advocacy. Relatedly, APA apologized to First Peoples (2023) and people of color (American Psychological Association, 2021c) for its role in promoting, perpetuating, and failing to challenge racism and racial discrimination in U.S. psychology. Within the apologies, APA pledged to address problematic educational and training practices and promote culturally responsive education and training that ensures the success of all students. To ensure consistency around the field’s approach to racism, American Psychological Association (2021b) released a resolution offering a uniform definition and understanding of racism, urging psychologists to focus on all types of racism, including internalized racism, interpersonal racism, institutional racism, and structural racism.
