Impact of learning environment and extracurricular activities on students’ soft skills development – case study in Vietnam
Purpose This study aims to assess the impact of the learning environment and extracurricular activities on the development of soft skills among university students in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach The study applies a quantitative method to assess the impact of the learning environment and extracurricular activities on students’ soft skills development. Quantitative data were collected through a survey of 259 university students and analyzed using SPSS, including Cronbach’s Alpha reliability testing, exploratory factor analysis, and multiple linear regression to measure the relationships between variables. Findings The results indicate that the quality of the learning environment and the extent of participation in extracurricular activities both have a positive and significant impact on the development of soft skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and time management. Improving the learning environment and diversifying extracurricular activities not only enhances soft skills but also better prepares students to adapt to the labor market and future career demands. Originality/value This study contributes to a better understanding of the role of the learning environment and extracurricular activities in fostering soft skills – key factors for students’ future career success. Based on these findings, the study proposes practical solutions to improve the quality of the learning environment and encourage student participation in extracurricular activities in the context of globalization.
