Energy Storage Advancements: Cutting-Edge Technologies, Intelligent Management Frameworks, and Strategies for Sustainable Implementation

This review explores the technological advancements, economic feasibility, and growth trends of energy storage systems (ESSs) integrated with advanced energy management systems (AEMSs) from 2000 to 2030. It assesses key storage technologies—including battery (BESS), mechanical (MESS), and thermal (TES) systems—using metrics such as compound annual growth rate (CAGR), net present value (NPV), and levelized cost of storage (LCOS). Through a structured analysis of peer-reviewed literature, market data, and case studies, the study finds that lithium-ion batteries lead short-term storage with a CAGR of 43% (2011–2025), driven by cost reductions and high efficiency, while pumped hydro remains essential for long-term needs despite geographical constraints. Flow batteries and thermal storage show promise for enhancing grid resilience and industrial decarbonization. Additionally, advanced AEMS leveraging AI and machine learning can improve operational efficiency by 10–30% in hybrid systems. By 2030, BESSs are projected to constitute 65% of new installations, underscoring the importance of policy support, material recycling, and hybrid solutions. This study offers practical insights to help stakeholders align energy storage strategies with global decarbonization objectives.
