What Will it Take for a Woman to Become President of the United States?

Abstract In this article we consider what it will take for a woman to be elected President of the United States. We examine the available data from the 2024 election, in comparison to previous elections; we inspect the main findings from the feminist political science of political parties, candidate selection and gendered barriers to elected leadership; and we consider the lessons from routes to high office in comparable countries, especially the UK. We conclude that the next US President will likely be a man. However, it is still possible—though unlikely—that a Republican woman could win.
