Beyond the rainbow destinations: A systematic review of LGBTIQ+ tourism research
This article presents a systematic review of 105 empirical studies on LGBTIQ+ tourism published between 1996 and 2024. The analysis reveals key trends, including a strong focus on gay travellers and developed countries, while highlighting the underrepresentation of bisexual, transgender, and intersex individuals. Five thematic clusters are identified: gay tourism, identity, LGBTIQ+ travellers, geography and space, and festivals and leisure. The review exposes significant gaps in inclusivity and representation, calling for more intersectional and diverse approaches, to promote a comprehensive understanding of LGBTIQ+ tourism.
