Ways of Seeing Southeast Asia
Abstract This essay is a review of two important recent publications on photography from Southeast Asia that highlight image archives and the significant role that the National Gallery of Singapore and the National Gallery of Australia have played in developing collections of Southeast Asian photographic artists. Both fill a gap in scholarship that has often overlooked Southeast Asia as a site of production and studies of Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art that has only recently paid attention to photography in the region.
