Metalens-assisted wide-angle dynamic holography for 3D full-color display

Current dynamic holographic display has a limited field of view (FOV) due to large pixel pitches of reconfigurable devices such as spatial light modulators (SLMs) and digital micro-mirror devices (DMDs). Despite various efforts to develop FOV expanders, the achieved FOVs remain limited for dynamic holographic display. Here, we use a large numerical-aperture (NA) metalens to directly extend the FOV up to 38.9° × 50.3° without any further expansion through a subsequent imaging procedure. Due to the dispersion-less feature of geometric phase, the metalens can project time-multiplexed RGB holographic images onto identical spatial position for the elimination of achromatic aberration. To realize three-dimensional (3D) color display, the dynamic SLM phase is scaled down first to generate small-sized multi-plane holographic color images, which are magnified with a large FOV by the metalens. These technologies allow us to demonstrate large-FOV 3D full-color dynamic holographic videos for future advanced display.
