<scp>GIS</scp> ‐based analytical hierarchy process for geolocation of areas with high solar photovoltaic potential in the region of <scp>Fez‐Meknes</scp> , <scp>Morocco</scp>
Abstract Selecting the appropriate site to host renewable energy systems is a key element for the global energy transition and allows for optimal yields. In this context, the present study uses geographic information systems (GIS) and multi‐criteria decision‐making techniques to identify the ideal sites for photovoltaic farms (PV) based on a database with a spatial resolution of 250 m/pixel provided by the SolarGIS database of satellite images with a long annual recovery time (24 years). The analytical hierarchy process method is also used to calculate and weight each critical factor, including climate, environment, water resources, and location. The study's findings show that the southern and southeastern parts of the region include all eligible sites and that 11.94% of the Fez‐Meknes region is a highly suitable area to host solar farms, with a large and continuous surface. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to examine the relevance of the decision criteria. Within this area, a pilot segment has been selected as a prospective site for a photovoltaic power plant, the energy production of which has been estimated. The study evaluates multiple feasibility scenarios that consider various photovoltaic module types and system configurations to identify the most suitable options for the region. Potential energy output is estimated for each scenario to support informed decision‐making in the energy sector.
