A <scp>NDO</scp> ‐Backstepping Current Tracking Method for <scp>SEIG</scp> ‐ <scp>STATCOM</scp>

To mitigate the voltage drop at the generator terminal of self‐excited induction generators (SEIGs) under load injection, a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is being used. However, conventional control methods suffer from poor dynamic performance and voltage quality. To address these challenges, a backstepping control strategy with a nonlinear tracking differentiator (NTD) and a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) based on an inverse hyperbolic sine has here been proposed. This control strategy consisted of a proportional component and a feedforward differential component. The NDO was introduced into the backstepping current loop and was used to compensate for the system disturbances. It was possible to achieve a zero‐tracking error of the steady‐state current under parameter uncertainties and modeling error with the proposed method, and its differential signal could be obtained quickly and accurately by using the NTD. The effectiveness of the NDO‐backstepping controller in disturbance rejection and precise current tracking is validated through simulations and experimental tests, with the latter conducted on a downscaled laboratory prototype. © 2025 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Abstract
