An implementation for the video processing of Barnes maze experiments in computational biophysics

In this work, we present a new R package for video processing in the Barnes Maze paradigm, a widely used method to assess memory and spatial navigation in rodents. The package aims to reduce analysis time and improve access to key parameters related to memory and navigation in rats. The package automatically extracts frames from experimental videos, detects the Barnes Maze arena and tracks subjects’ trajectories across trials. Implemented in R, it integrates easily into existing data analysis workflows and offers greater flexibility for processing and interpreting behavioral data. We demonstrate the package’s performance with experimental video examples. This open-source tool is simple yet robust, minimizing operational complexity. It is accessible to users with no prior experience in image or video processing. Thus, it provides an efficient alternative for analyzing Barnes Maze experiments and supports research in neuropharmacology, experimental therapeutics and behavioral neuroscience.
