Media Art in Immersive EDM Performances: Classification and Aesthetic Analysis through Immersion, Simulacra, and Posthumanism
This study explores the aesthetic characteristics and philosophical implications of immersive EDM (Electronic Dance Music) performances integrated with media art, a prominent trend in contemporary performing arts. Immersive EDM performances transcend spatial and physical limitations by merging musical elements with advanced digital media technologies such as projection mapping, AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), and holograms. These performances reshape audience participation and the aesthetic paradigm of performance art. The research applies Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk theory to analyze artistic integration, Csikszentmihalyi’s flow theory to examine psychological immersion, Baudrillard’s simulacrum to explore hyperreality, and posthumanism to address human-technology interactions. Additionally, Appadurai’s mediascape theory frame the cultural interpretation and global expansion of EDM media art. Through multi-dimensional analysis of globally acclaimed performances, this study highlights how immersive EDM performances redefine aesthetic experience, expand ontological boundaries, and create shared cultural meanings. The convergence of technology and art is presented not only as an innovation in stagecraft but also as a catalyst for future performance aesthetics and participatory media culture.
