From Margins to Networks: Minoritized Language Digital Content Creation's Impact on Linguistic Ideologies: The Galician Case

ABSTRACT By focusing on Galician‐language online content creation through a corpus of semistructured interviews with eight professional and semiprofessional influencers, this paper examines how language ideologies surrounding minoritized languages have been shaped and reshaped because of their inclusion in the digital realm. The contribution of this piece is twofold: empirically, it is centred on a novel phenomenon in the field of minoritized languages—that of social media and, more specifically, individual content creation; theoretically, it deepens our understanding of how communicative structures can transform linguistic ideologies. Findings show that social media enhances access and content creation for minoritized language speakers, challenging dominant linguistic ideologies despite limited resources and institutional support and digital platforms' inability to offer safe spaces for speakers. Moreover, polarization—despite fostering negative attitudes—often leads to solidarity among diverse audiences, increasing Galician's visibility. Ultimately, the digital sphere, despite its challenges, moderates the relationship between linguistic attitudes and ideologies, promoting normalization and encouraging linguistic reflection and awareness.
