The essence of the use of business analytics and business intelligence systems in supporting managerial decision-making in organisations

The primary objective of this article is to analyse the knowledge of students - future, system users and managers - regarding the use of business analytics and business intelligence systems to support managerial decision making in organisations. The aim was also to find out whether students only have an intuition for business analytics and business intelligence, whether they are aware of how it can be used effectively and whether it can support managerial decision making in the organisation. The research was carried out using the CAWI method. The questionnaire prepared for this purpose was first reviewed by experts in the field of Business Analytics and Business Intelligence and then made available for students to complete on the servers of the Faculty of Management at the University of Warsaw. The questionnaire covered general knowledge of concepts related to Business Analytics and Business Intelligence, detailed definitional knowledge of selected categories in this field and the possibility of using these issues to support managerial decision-making in an organisation. Although there is a growing and developing interest among organisations in researching the use of business analytics and business intelligence, it is not a popular focus among students. Increasing the availability of BI training and courses that incorporate modern tools and change management methodologies is critical to developing students’ skills. In addition, training should place a strong emphasis on the practical application of analytical tools. All of this will enhance students’ employability and enable them to use BI more effectively in future organisations. The results of the survey point to the need to develop students’ skills in business analytics and business intelligence. Through appropriate training, including both technical and change management aspects, universities can prepare students to effectively implement BI in different types of organisations, enabling them to later succeed professionally in this dynamic field.
