Indications for intestinal and multivisceral transplantation in pediatric patients: a systematic review
• Liver disease from parenteral nutrition leads pediatric intestinal transplant need. • Kaufman criteria guide listing for pediatric intestinal transplantation. • Loss of venous access predicts early pediatric intestinal transplantation. • Quality of life is an important fator. • Over 60% wean off parenteral nutrition after intestinal transplantation. Objective: This is a systematic review that aims to collect and analyze existing literature on the indications for intestinal transplantation and multivisceral transplantation in pediatric patients. Methodology: The electronic search method was developed using the PubMed database, in which an exploration of the articles indexed therein was carried out. Results: This review covered a total of 18 eligible studies, investigating various indications, whether consolidated or not. Conclusion: Intestinal and multivisceral transplantation are not routinely recommended as a preventive measure, although some of their indications are described. However, they remain indicated, most commonly when complications arise during prolonged intestinal rehabilitation, considering the impairment of quality of life associated with the life-threatening risk to pediatric patients.
