Simulation Analytics of Surabaya Mass Rapid Transportation Networks for Sustainable Development
The role of transport in sustainable development has gained global attention in recent years. Due to the increased number of vehicles in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, the local government plans to build the Surabaya Mass Rapid Transportation (SMART) network. This study aims to simulate travel time and costs from 65 origins and 60 destinations with and without using SMART, resulting in 3,900 pairwise travel nodes. The distances and time travel from each pair of origins and destinations are simulated using the average as a proxy to the optimal solution with SQL and MicroStrategy. The mathematical model is proposed to calculate the travel cost’s lower and upper bound. The simulation result shows that SMART did not provide a relatively more significant advantage for citizens compared to those who are used to utilizing cars as a transportation mode to travel from their origin to their destination. As time benefits were impossible, the only possible suggestion to trigger the citizens was to lower the ticket prices. However, this proposal burdens the government with large subsidies. As owning a vehicle is a status symbol in Indonesia, skeptics have wondered whether locals would opt for SMART instead of being dropped off at their doorstep using their own vehicle.
